Josep Aragay, artist and theorist of Noucentisme
Synopsis:
Josep Aragay i Blanchar (Barcelona 1889 – Breda 1973) was one of the most important figures of the cultural scene of the Noucentisme period. An illustrator, painter and ceramist, Aragay was also an engraver, poet, teacher, politician and art theorist. A tireless debater, he advocated the Noucentist ideal right through to the end of his life, earning a reputation for his staunch, passionate character as one of the most essential idealogues of the time. Despite his influence on the intellectual debate between Classicism and modernity in the 1920s, Aragay has remained a largely unknown figure, beyond his work as a ceramist.
Based on his doctoral thesis, Xavier Castanyerâs book aims to restore the memory of the artist and highlight the real scope and impact that he had on contemporary Catalan art. This is the first comprehensive study on Josep Aragay, based on research into an extensive and diverse range of unpublished documents.
